2015 Sacred Heart Whole School Public Speaking Competition

All Sacred Heart students will be participating in the Whole School Public Speaking Competition in Term 4.

Years 3-6 students will choose from the below topics and prepare a 2-3 minute speech on one topics. All students should prepare their speech at home over weeks 4-5. Students will present speeches on Thursday and Friday of Week 5, and one finalist per class will be selected from these presentations to present at the Sacred Heart Mona Vale Public Speaking final in the Hall on Tuesday 10th November, 2015 from 9:00am. Finalists will also present a short (1 min) impromptu speech on the day.  Students will be given a small amount of practice time at school but the main preparation should be carried out at home.

Topics for this year's 3-6 speeches are as follows:

• If you could meet anyone from the past, who would it be?
• Native animals need our help.
• You can't judge a book by its cover.
• Refugees - everybody has a story.
• The environment should be a top priority.

Rules
· No microphones will be used by speakers.
· No props to be used by speakers.
· Small palm cards are encouraged.
· Adjudication for speeches will be consistent with the Guidelines and the below Adjudicator’s Score Sheet.

Content
Began in an interesting manner.
Central theme evident and logical sequence developed.
Supported opinion with facts and examples.
Appropriate use of language.
Strong ending, as close as possible to the time allowed.
Delivery
Visual: Stood straight and tall. Good eye contact
Unobtrusive use of notes. Gestures which assist in conveying a message.
Vocal: Clear and appropriate use of voice. Varied expression.
Pace not too fast.
The ability to establish a rapport with the audience.

5 = outstanding   4 = very good   3 = good   2 = OK, but could improve   1= Needs practice in this area

Public Speaking Champs!

Well done to our local heroes - Thomas and Lucie!  They both spoke beautifully today in the Br Tony Whealan inter-school public speaking competition and represented Sacred Heart with pride and honour.  It was  a pleasure to listen to their prepared and impromptu speeches, which they delivered with confidence and finesse!  Well done!

Australian Identity

This term Year 6 will be learning about our Australian Identity in HSIE.

We will be defining what makes a 'typical' Australian, researching famous Australians and their contributions to our identity, and exploring signs and symbols as well as songs, poetry and art that have helped shape our ideas of our Australian identity.

The majority of our HSIE activities will be undertaken through a contract of choice activities that students can investigate at home and at school.

Term 2 Events - Well done Year 6!

Year 6 had an extremely busy end of term with Week 10 seeing the children celebrate their learning about Federation with an expo type presentation day, the Eagle Tag and NRL Gala Days and our school crossing construction day on the last day of school.

All the children worked really hard this term and have produced wonderful results across their learning areas.

Participate in 'the most fun and awesome word building competition in Australia.'  Build as many words as you can from a given selection of letters.  How many words can you make in 3 minutes?

It’s Electrifying School Zone Lights Project

Schools need to move students from school to home safely. 

Design a plan that will enable drivers to recognise the location of our school.

·         Use a circuit in your design that provides light energy (Can you make your lights flash??)

·         Include a switch in your circuit

·         Provide a scaled model of roads and crossing.

·         Include times on signage that correlate with NSW school zone times.

·         Provide a labelled diagram of the light/s mechanism including scientific symbols to illustrate your circuit.

We will have a whole day on Friday of Week 10 to create your working model at school.

Design your plan for homework in Week 10 and bring your plan to school by Thursday to use when constructing your model. (There will be no other homework in Week 10).

You will also need to provide your own materials for both the road and crossing model (perhaps some little cars and people too!) as well as the circuitry materials.  JayCar at Mona Vale or Brookvale can provide electronic materials for Science projects very cheaply (but you will have to go there!). 

Please be prepared!! as we do not have the materials at school to contribute to this assessment.
