Let's Talk About Rights!

What are rights?  Why are they important?

After viewing and discussing the BTN article about the Rights of a Child answer the comprehension questions in your HSIE books.

Class Discussion:
Brainstorm a list of basic human rights for everyone.

Are there any rights that are more important to children?

The UN Convention on the Rights of a Child can be viewed at the following website http://www.childrensweek.org.au/UN%20poster%20Jan%202008.pdf

Here is a summary of the Convention on the Rights of a Child.

Rank these rights from most important to least important. Explain why you think these rights are important - use your best persuasive language techniques!

o   Children have the right to be with their family or a family who will care for them
o   Children have the right to an adequate standard of living
o   Children with a disability have the right to special care
o   Every child has the right to be alive
o   Children have the right to good quality education
o   Children must not be used as cheap workers or soldiers
o   Children have the right to say what they think and to meet together to express their views
o   Every child has the right to a name and nationality
o   Children have the right to nutritious food and clean water
o   Children have the right to health care
o   Children have the right to play
o   Children have the right to be kept safe and not be hurt or neglected
o   Children have the right to practise their own language, religion and culture

Paired Research
Visit the Australian Government Information and Services webpage about Rights here.

Choose  one of the sets of rights to explore/research.  Make a summary of your findings in your HSIE books (both students must record).  Share your findings at the end of the lesson.

Make sure a variety of rights are explored (eg, not everyone to do Human Rights in the classroom for example).

Australian Identity

This term Year 6 will be learning about our Australian Identity in HSIE.

We will be defining what makes a 'typical' Australian, researching famous Australians and their contributions to our identity, and exploring signs and symbols as well as songs, poetry and art that have helped shape our ideas of our Australian identity.

The majority of our HSIE activities will be undertaken through a contract of choice activities that students can investigate at home and at school.

What makes a typical Australian?

Watch the following YouTube videos and consider the different cultures that contribute to our identity as Australians today:
Childrens Festival Part 1
Childrens Festival Part 2
A video project about Cultural diversity

Visit Face the Facts website to find statistics about multiculturalism in Australia today.

Make a poster to illustrate the real Australia in 2015, compared to the stereotypical view of the 'typical' Aussie.

Famous Australians and their contribution to our Australian identity

The following websites will help students to investigate famous Australians:

50 Top Australians - The Australian Newspaper
Famous Australians
Famous Australians - Aussie Educator

Or choose a famous Australian from the categories below to research further:

It’s Electrifying School Zone Lights Project

Schools need to move students from school to home safely.

Design a plan that will enable drivers to recognise the location of our school.

·         Use a circuit in your design that provides light energy (Can you make your lights flash??)
·         Include a switch in your circuit
·         Provide a scaled model of roads and crossing.
·         Include times on signage that correlate with NSW school zone times.
·         Provide a labelled diagram of the light/s mechanism including scientific symbols to illustrate your circuit.

We will have a whole day on Friday of Week 10 to create your working model at school.

Design your plan for homework in Week 10 and bring your plan to school by Thursday to use when constructing your model. (There will be no other homework in Week 10).

You will also need to provide your own materials for both the road and crossing model (perhaps some little cars and people too!) as well as the circuitry materials.  JayCar at Mona Vale or Brookvale can provide electronic materials for Science projects very cheaply (but you will have to go there!).

Please be prepared!! as we do not have the materials at school to contribute to this assessment.
